The DNS acronym can be used for "Domain Name System" and "domain name server" and although they share the same acronym they have different meanings. A Domain Name System is the overall system used to make a domain name an IP address as explained above.

Authoritative nameserver - This final nameserver can be thought of as a dictionary on a rack of books, in which a specific name can be translated into its definition. The authoritative nameserver is the last stop in the nameserver query. If the authoritative name server has access to the requested record, it will return the IP address for the requested hostname back to the DNS Recursor (the As you probably know, DNS is short for domain name system, and it's the globally distributed database that turns server names that humans can remember, such as nakedsecurity.sophos.com, into 1. DNS provided by Virgin Media, GoogleDNS, Cloudflare etc is recursive DNS 2. Virgin Media and OpenDNS don't support DNSSEC - this might not be a big thing as unless the resource you connect to uses DNSSEC in the first place then the DNS results are still vulnerable to hijacking. 3. When a mismatch happens, a site can't be reached or a particular user can't reach the said website. The mismatch can happen both on your local DNS server (which prevents you from reaching an internet website) or on the DNS server of a particular site you're trying to reach (preventing the site from being reached). Your DNS server would ask the root for www.sendgrid.com, and the root would say, "I don't know the IP address for www.sendgrid.com, but here's the IP address for the .COM DNS server." Your name server then sends a query to the .COM DNS server asking it if it knows the IP address for www.sendgrid.com. I haven't touched that particular DNS in a long time. I did update the server DNS points to last year but I didn't need to make any changes on the server to get the site back. I just killed that Proxied option in the DNS.

The domain name must be owned, registered and pointed to AT&T DNS servers within 30 days of activation. Note: AT&T reserves the right to discontinue service if this does not occur or if the domain name remains improperly registered for a period of more than 30 days.

The ability to change the DNS configuration of a web site is an important feature for many people. However, incorrect DNS modifications can take an entire web site down for an extended period of time. This is because DNS changes aren't instant (see the Tutorial below).
